VAR to be used from quarter-finals at 2019 AFCON

CAF have announced that Video Assistance Refereeing technology (VAR) will be used at the 2019 AFCON starting from the quarter-final stage.

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Egypt from 21 June to 19 July 2019, with 24 teams taking part in the competition for the first ever time.

Less than two months before the tournament, the CAF have confirmed that the VAR will debut in an AFCON tournament, but it will only be used starting for the second knockout round.

“VAR at the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt will begin from the quarter-finals of the competition,” the chairman of Caf’s Referees Committee Souleyman Waberi said on Tuesday.

This means that the VAR will not be used in the group-stages or the round of 16 and it will be implemented only in the last eight games of the tournament.

This also will not be the first time that VAR to be used in African football, as it was first trialled during the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco as well as the Champions League and Confederation Cup finals.
