FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019: Ecuador survive late Australia charge

Players of Ecuador celebrate

Two goals inside the first ten minutes of the match were enough to see Ecuador past Australia 2-1 in Group B action at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019™. Both scores took favourable deflections for the Ecuadorians, with the second counting as an own goal against Australia defender Anton Mlinaric. But Noah Botic's 90th-minute strike revitalised the Joeys, who applied pressure until the final whistle.

Ecuador's speedy, technical wide players caused problems for Australia from the beginning. Forward Pedro Vite's barreling run and centering pass forced the friendly fire in the ninth minute. Five minutes prior, Erick Plaus' first-time effort from outside the box caromed off a Joeys defender and settled into the back of the net. The Ecuador defense was resolute for almost all of the match, allowing only three shots to hit the target, but nearly lost their advantage in the final minutes.

Australia found themselves in an early hole and managed to climb their way back into the match thanks to Botic. Though they enjoyed more possession overall, it wasn't until the second half that the Joeys began to trouble Ecuador goalkeeper Joan Lopez. As the match wore on they proved their mettle, and Australia were on the front foot for most of the final 20 minutes, though they could not equalise in the end.
