Women Football: Atletico Madrid progress in champions league beating Man city 2-1(3-2 agg)

Manchester City were knocked out of the Women's Champions League by Atletico Madrid for a second consecutive season after a 2-1 second-leg loss in Spain.

England captain Steph Houghton's first-half own goal and Atletico skipper Angela Sosa's close-range finish gave the hosts control in the last-16 tie.

Germany's Pauline Bremer pulled a goal back late on, but City had to avoid losing after the first-leg draw.

Defeat in Madrid was a third straight loss in all competitions for City.

Nick Cushing's side reached the semi-finals in 2016-17 and 2017-18 but were knocked out by Atletico in the last-32 stage in 2018-19 and came unstuck against the Spanish league winners again this term.

City knew they needed a score draw or better in Madrid to have any hope of reaching the quarter-finals, after a 1-1 first-leg draw in Manchester on 16 October, and they mounted late pressure but could not find an equaliser.
