The host nation largely had the better of the contest in Brasilia though they briefly trailed after a double from Chile’s Joan Cruz. Kaio Jorge netted early but they needed a penalty in first-half injury time from the same player to draw level, before the winner midway through the second period.

Brazil had far better goalscoring opportunities yet were outpossessed for periods of the second half as Chile desperately tried to keep their campaign alive. The home side will be pleased with their attacking output, but on the debit side they conceded twice for the first time in the tournament. Brazil will now face the winner of Ecuador-Italy in search of a semi-final berth.

Chile exit the tournament with their heads held high having pushed a strong host nation side all the way in their Round of 16 tie. La Roja shocked their opponents with a quickfire double from Cruz, showing impressive resilience in front of a noisy home crowd and having conceding early. Chile fought back strongly after the interval and seemingly were in command when Diego found the winner with a powerful long-range effort.
