Phil Thompson tells Liverpool to lure Philippe Coutinho back to Anfield

Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports – as quoted by the Evening Standard – that Liverpool need to lure Philippe Coutinho back to Anfield this summer, and would have the Brazilian “in a heartbeat” if given the opportunity.

Coutinho, 27, left Liverpool in January 2018 to move to Barcelona but the 61-time Brazil international has endured a difficult spell since leaving Merseyside. Frozen out by Barcelona after just 76 outings, he has struggled on loan at Bayern Munich.

This season, Coutinho has scored just nine goals in 32 games for Bayern and the German champions are unlikely to splash the cash to land the playmaker on a permanent deal. It leaves Coutinho with an interesting summer ahead of him.

He will be desperate to leave Barcelona where he is clearly surplus to requirements and Anfield icon Thompson says he would want Coutinho back at Liverpool – despite the Brazilian showing little loyalty to the Reds when Barcelona came calling.

“They are probably looking at that creative midfield player,” Thompson said. “Would you take Coutinho back? I would, in a heartbeat. I think he’s a creative genius. “You look back at his Liverpool career and he was absolutely terrific.

“He’s not too old and I still think he could come back. It probably won’t happen but it’s that creative player just off the front three that would probably just tip the balance.”
