Portugal's top-flight football division to restart June 4

Portuguese top-flight to resume on June 4

Portugal's top-flight football division will restart on June 4 subsequent to being ended since March because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the league's organizing body said in an announcement on Tuesday.

The government had at first given May 30 as the date for action to continue yet the league said the first match would take place on June 4 so as to permit enough time for arenas to be reviewed and for all players to undergo tests for the virus.

Porto led the standings by one over champions Benfica when the season was inconclusively delayed, with 10 games remaining.

The Portuguese top flight joins leagues in various European nations including the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany in reporting the returning of soccer after their seasons were stopped in order to slow the spread of the virus.

France's Ligue 1 and the Netherlands' Eredivisie, nonetheless, have been ended by their separate governments.
