Women Football: Kgatlana leaves Portuguese side Benfica

Kgatlana leaves Benfica as Motlhalo shines in Sweden

There was mixed news on Wednesday for the exciting Banyana Banyana duo of Linda Motlhalo and Thembi Kgatlana, with one set to leave their club and the other finding a crucial winner.

Kgatlana has left Portuguese side Benfica after making only three substitute appearances for the side, during which time she managed two goals.

Her season was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and she has left club, making the announcement via her Twitter account.

But she has departed with a plan, as her representative Chris Atkins has revealed.

“I can confirm Thembi Kgatlana has left SL Benfica,” he said. “Covid-19 has had a big impact on the women's game but Thembi will go from strength to strength regardless. The next steps are in place and will be announced shortly.”

Meanwhile, Motlhalo reversed her poor start to the new season in Swede when she scored the winner for Djurgardens in a 2-1 success over Vittsjo.

The 22-year-old was sent-off on her league debut late last month, but on her return to the side netted an 86th minute winner as Djurgardens claimed their first success of the Damallsvenskan campaign.

Having also netted a brace in the cup back in February, she now has three goals in as many appearances for the side.

Recent weeks have seen a boon in South African women’s players securing deals in Europe, after Janine van Wyk (Glasgow City, Scotland), Kelso Peskin (Stade Brestois, France), Amanda Mthandi (CD Badajoz, Spain), Nothando Vilakazi (EDF LogroƱo, Spain) and Jermaine Seoposenwe (Sporting Braga, Portugal) all won deals.
